Setting Goals for Nutrition Education
Chinquapin Preparatory School implements a coordinated health program with a nutrition education component; nutrition education fosters healthy eating behaviors. The School shall implement, in accordance with law, a coordinated health program with a nutrition education component and shall use health course curriculum that emphasizes the importance of proper nutrition. Students will receive nutrition education that fosters the adoption and maintenance of healthy eating behaviors.
In addition:
- Nutrition education will be a school priority and will be integrated into other areas of the curriculum as appropriate.
- Staff responsible for nutrition education will be adequately prepared and will participate in professional development activities to effectively deliver the program as planned.
- The food service staff, teachers, and other personnel will coordinate the promotion of nutrition messages in the cafeteria, the classroom, and other appropriate settings.
- Educational nutrition information will be shared with families and the general public to positively influence the health of students and community members.
Setting Physical Activity Goals
Students are given opportunities for physical activity through a range of after school programs including, but not limited to, intramurals, interscholastic athletics, and physical activity clubs.
In addition:
- Chinquapin will provide an environment that fosters safe and enjoyable fitness activities for all students, including those who are not participating in competitive sports.
- Physical education classes will regularly emphasize moderate to vigorous activity.
- Chinquapin will encourage teachers to integrate physical activity into the academic curriculum where appropriate.
- After school physical activity programs will be offered and students will be encouraged to participate.
- Chinquapin will encourage parents to support their children’s participation, to be active role models, and to include physical activity in family events.
- Chinquapin will encourage students, parents, staff, and community members to use the school’s recreational facilities that are available outside of the school day.
Establishing Nutrition Standards for All Foods Available on School Campus During the School Day
Nutrition guidelines selected by the local educational agency for all foods available on school campus under the local educational agency during the school day with the objectives of promoting student health and reducing childhood obesity.
In addition:
- Sufficient time will be allowed for students to eat meals in lunchroom facilities that are clean, safe, and comfortable.
- Wellness for students and their families will be promoted through information posted in the cafeteria and in brochures sent home to families.
- Employee wellness education and involvement will be promoted at suitable school activities.
Setting Goals in the School Meals Program
Chinquapin Preparatory School’s nutrition policy shall ensure that nutrition guidelines for reimbursable school meals shall be at least as restrictive as federal regulations and guidance and that all foods available on each campus are in accordance with the Texas Public School Nutrition Policy.
In addition:
- Students shall be able to voice their opinions and choices through surveys, suggestion box, and advisory committee to assure meals are enjoyable and consumable.
- Teachers shall be able to voice their opinions and choices as well.
- Menus shall be continually refined to include the highest level of nutrition as well as preferred choices by students and faculty.
Setting Goals for other School-Based Activities Designed to Promote Student Wellness
Each school district in the State is required in Chapter 28, Subchapter A-K, and Chapter 38.013 of the Texas Education Code, to establish and maintain a district-level school health advisory council.
Chinquapin Preparatory School maintains a health and nutrition advisory council including teachers, students and Food Service Manager. Activities encouraging students to examine personal nutritional quality and improvement will be implemented in classroom education. Safety and cleanliness in handling of foods and personal hygiene will also be stressed in classroom education.
In addition to legal requirements Chinquapin shall:
- Establish age-appropriate guidelines for food and beverages served at classroom parties or school celebrations.
- Provide teachers with education and guidelines on the use of food as a reward in the classroom.
- Establish guidelines for school-sponsored fund-raising activities that involve serving food.
- Require healthy food and beverage options be included at concessions during school-related events outside of the school day.
Setting Goals for Measurement and Evaluation
Monitoring of implementation of the wellness policy shall occur through food services, athletics, Health and skills educators, and the physical education and recreation department, as well as other persons within the local education agency as appropriate. Periodic formal evaluation shall occur as required. At Chinquapin Preparatory School, this evaluation shall be conducted through the Wellness Committee, a standing committee that includes at least the following persons: food services director, athletics director, Health instructor (or other skills instructor or department chair), residence life adviser, office business manager, and a member of the community (parent, volunteer, etc.). This Committee shall meet regularly to discuss the health and well-being of the greater Chinquapin community and find creative solutions to issues raised by the members of the Committee; currently, this Committee meets once per quarter.
