Chinquapin Prep has provided economically disadvantaged youth from the Houston area with the opportunity for a better future through education.

about chinquapin prep

Chinquapin Prep and its staff strive to provide a high-quality college-preparatory education and nurturing college prep on campus living in Houston TX to able and motivated youth from underserved families in the greater Houston area. Through its rigorous curriculum and an emphasis on community service and earning what one receives, Chinquapin Prep aims to produce responsible, well-educated citizens who will become constructive leaders in the community.

Founded in 1969 by St John’s faculty member Bob Moore, Chinquapin Prep has since evolved into a co-ed, private college preparatory boarding and day school that sends every single graduating senior into a four-year college or university. That’s because acceptance to a four-year collegiate program is a requirement.

We generally carry 150 students that range from sixth to twelfth grade. Our emphasis on succeeding in college has led to 85 percent of Chinquapin Prep graduates to complete their college education and 36 percent of them going on to pursue graduate work.

Our students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades attend day school while our high schoolers are encouraged to live in our single-sex dorms and contribute to campus through their hard work and leadership while enjoying Houston college prep on campus living.

Students we look for at our Houston college prep boarding school

Our college prep boarding school in Houston TX features a merit-based admissions process. This means our team will go through applications to seek the most determined students who show the most potential for success in college and in their professional lives.

Decisions are not made on grades and test scores alone. The following is some information about what we look for at our institution.

  • Chinquapin students have grit. They are perseverant, determined and want to make a difference in their communities.
  • Incoming students are not always at the top of their class or maxing out test scores.
  • Chinquapin Prep looks for students with aptitude, demonstrated ability and leadership qualities who might otherwise get overlooked.
  • Chinquapin focuses more on the delta of how far a student will come as opposed to being the best.

As a privately funded boarding school, we rely on donations from individuals, corporations and foundations to maintain our $2.5 million budget while granting our students and their families a sliding scale tuition model that allows them to pay what they can. Most families pay roughly $500 per year for their child’s tuition.

Chinquapin Prep: Where income does not dictate outcome

We encourage families of underserved communities to consider Chinquapin Prep and our Houston college prep boarding school to help further the educational lives of their children. We also invite you to give generously to our organization in hopes that we can continue helping our students attend and thrive in a college setting.
